Muscle Car Music

"Stylo" Gorillaz (featuring Bobby Womack and Mos Def) Plastic Beach

Haven't had time to actually soak the new Gorillaz album, Plastic Beach but this song and video are excellent...I didn't know soul crooner, Bobby Womack was on the track. The video features Bruce Willis who still looks tough as hell even though he's pushing 60.

I dig the muscle cars in the video as well, two of my favs: Chevy Camaro and El Camino. The El Camino was fast, mean and you could throw stuff in the back. The ultimate man's car. Been feelin' this track this week.

Outlaws

David Bowie

Jimi Hendrix

Scott Weiland

James Brown

Frank Sinatra

Steve McQueen

Johnny Cash

Mickey Rourke

I dig the smug attitude of all of these actors and artists..almost a half smile. These pictures embody the rock'n roll nonchalant persona these guys had. Most of these charges were dope and DUI arrests but in the end Johnny Law prevailed.

But just because Johnny Law busts the party doesn't mean you have to go down without a fight. Give'em a half smile and some attitude. Sure you may not have your PR and representation on speed dial or a million in the bank but doesn't mean you can't act like it.

Sketchy

I've always been into drawing since I was a kid. I checked out books from the Library and taught myself how to sketch action heroes and exotic cars but my specialties were castles and pirate ships. As I grew up I continued to draw and even took a few sketching classes in college but never pursued it.

I've been sketching a lot lately though and it's been good to get back into it. I stumbled upon the site Numerous Drawings created by the clothing designers of Shipley & Halmos when I was doing research for my California post. Pretty cool sketches done by these guys using the same pencil and paper and sometimes markers with no eraser. My style all the way..

Astor Piazzolla

Astor Piazzolla

I've always enjoyed the suave sound of Tango music. Astor Piazzolla, Argentinian master of Tango's song, Vuelvo al Sur is one of my favs...Checkout the Koop remix below. Definitely need to take a trip out to Argentina soon!

Sun Shades

Robert Redford

It's the time of year again for me to buy some new sunglasses. Trying to find out what brand of sunglasses Robert Redford is wearing in this pic...Need a new pair and I really dig the look of these.

Redford was so on point with style that it doesn't surprise me he's wearing something so contemporary looking for that time. I like the plastic aviator look but most are too big, I like how these fit the face better. Shoot me a message if anyone can find out what brand they are.

Cool site I stumbled on looking for pics of classic sunglasses.

Surfs Up

Pacifico, essential beach beer

Girls on the beach circa 1970

Tony Alva, Skateboarder

Surfer footwear of choice. Don't ask. They rock. Enough said.

The Ramones performing, California Sun, a cover by The Rivieras

I can't help but be influenced by California surf style in the 70's and 80's. I think everyone has a little California dreaming from time to time but the laid back rebellious surf look is one of my favs. Even New York punk rockers, The Ramones caught California fever when they covered the song, California Sun by The Rivieras.

"Well, I'm going out west out on the coast
Where the California girls are really the most.

And I walk and They walk i twist and They twist
I shimmy and they shimmy I fly and They fly
We're out there having fun in the warm California sun"

This summer I'm taking a trip to San Francisco and hopefully stopping in San Diego to drive instead of fly to San Francisco so I can stop off at a few of the beaches along the way. I may attempt to surf but if not I will be taking in the sun, sand, cold beer and...ahem...beautiful beach scenery.

Qi Baishi

In 2007, Qi Baishi's Peaches and Fire Crackers (1952) sold at Sotheby's in Hong Kong for £850,000

Picasso called Qi “the greatest oriental painter” and said that he did not dare visit China for fear of meeting him. Qi Baishi is just behind Picasso in art sales ranking. Picasso and Warhol raked in more than $220 million (£143 million) in sales between them in 2009. Qi immediately below them, with more than $70million in sales.

"The excellence of a painting lies in its being alike, yet unlike. Too much likeness flatters the vulgar taste; too much unlikeness deceives the world." -Qi Baishi

Blondie

Working on putting together a writeup about the New York City rock and art scene in the early '80's...Would've been an awesome time to live and experience. Debbie Harry, front woman for the group Blondie not only turned heads with her astonishing good looks and style but mixture of dance-reggae-punk-rock she was making at the time. Classic and iconic.
