New York State of Mind

For those who don't know I'm a big hip-hop head and I've been hittin' east coast old school hardcore...

The Lo will forever be nicin
Yeah; the Sonny Cheeba he be sippin Armaretta
The Geechie Gracious he be sippin Armaretta
We float the tri-state drink in this satin vines
This Coolie High jack pack from the sugar shack
Then what we do after we sip the Armaretta
We start the Harlem River quiver.

Cause pubas everything, and everything is pu
Cause I hitem with the (one), and then with the (two)
Yeah, cause thats just how grand pu and sadat doogie do
Ya didnt know I was the bomb baby
Somebody shouldve told you, somebody should have told you

Art of The Suit

I've been doing a ton of research on finding the perfect fitting suit and looking for that slim European cut. Indochino, a young Canadian startup specializes in making custom suits at a low cost with an updated cut. By sending Indochino your measurements they will tailor the suit per measurements and ship it out. Haven't purchased anything yet but I will be this fall/winter. I really dig their trench coat. Awesome cuts! Check them out here.

Rat Pack Hotel

Want to live like Sinatra for a night? Then book his Palm Springs bachelor pad. Would be killer place to get hitched although not sure my wife would be as excited as I would be especially considering Frank Sinatra's playboy lifestyle. It was rumored that Frank Sinatra had a checklist of young starlets he was gonna sleep with in his dressing room. Most of them were checked. Check his pad out here here.

Modern Vintage

I dig the classic red Henley Miles Davis was wearing in the video and the Persol 649 sunglasses keyboardist Keith Jarrett had on. Both of these items are essential for that cool and classic look.

Specs

It's that time of year again and I have to get some new specs. Looking for a classic pair like these Oliver Peoples glasses above.

The Black V

The black v-neck sweater is all attitude. The black v-neck is never in style because it never went out of style. Cool now and cool fifty years ago. Pair it with some worn-in plain front khakis for a Saturday at the book store or with some dark jeans and a blazer for late night drinks. The sweater above retails at Gap for $49.50.

Billie

There are some artists that you just have to listen to in the fall and winter and Billie Hoilday is one of them.

The Classic Cocktail Tray

When you pour someone a drink make sure you do it in style. Gone are the days of offering a proper drink when someone enters your home. Show some respect. Use a cocktail tray. It's a throwback to the Eisenhower days and says you have your act together, like a gentleman.

Sound of Cool: Miles Davis

It's arguably the greatest jazz recording of all time, a masterpiece, "Kind of Blue"

Miles Davis with secound great quintet.

The Pope of Greenwich Village

Stripes

Always dug this Nautical-Bohemian look for fall. Pablo Picasso was notorious for wearing stripes along with James Dean, Marlon Brando, John Cummings AKA "Johnny Ramone" and other artists....classic.

Need for Tweed

There's something about the fall weather that makes me reach instantly for my vintage Brooks Brothers Herringbone Tweed jacket. Maybe it's the falling leaves on the ground that makes me want to be on a Yale campus reading Hemmingway near the library with a cup of espresso or riding my bike to an old book shop in Paris. Either way tweed is instant classic.

Miles Davis was a big fan of the Ivy League Tweed look. The trick is to "cool it up" without making it look square. Pair it with a white button down and some beatup jeans and suede loafers one weekend or even with a white v-neck t-shirt. Just don't be surprised if the cute girl at the coffee shop stops to ask your opinion on Philosophy and starts calling you Professor.

1978 FJ40 Toyota Landcruiser

The 1970's Toyota FJ40 Landcruiser defined coolness and commanded respect on and off road. The classic stylings are timeless and the rugged performance of this vehicle is unmatched. With a straight four 2F engine this beast could climb land, water and asphalt. If you go to the jungle there's a 98% chance they will be driving a classic Toyota FJ40 Landcruiser.

I owned a 1978 FJ in high school and I never should've sold it. I used a mechanic nicknamed "Young Mechanic" from Vietnam...Best mechanic ever. He worked at an FJ restoration company during the day and on the weekends he moonlighted as "Young the Mechanic", him and his Vietnamiese buddies would get red faced drunk and work on FJ's all day in the hot Texas sun.

I think he would get so drunk he would start fixing things for free...I would get in my Crusier and suddenly my blinkers worked and gas gauge...Young would go on to tell me that I "cannot pickup guls" with no blinker..."it not safe". I would nod hand him his cash and be off just before Saturday night.
